Double Bass - Rhythm
Music is basically made up of two things - letters & numbers.
We have already come across letters with the names of the open strings, now it is time to learn a little bit about counting.
Music is divided up into smaller sections called bars. The numbers at the beginning are the Time Signature and this tells us how many beats in a bar.

Where the note is found on the stave tells us which note to play, but notes can look different and that tells us how long to play each note for.

Semibreve - 4 beats

Minims - 2 beats

Crotchets - 1 beat

Quavers - 1/2 beat - Can be written joined together and with a tail.

Time Signatures

4 at the bottom tells us crotchet beats

4 crotchets in a bar

3 crotchets in a bar

2 crotchets in a bar

2 at the bottom tells us minim beats

2 minims in a bar

4 minims in a bar

8 at the bottom tells us quavers beats

6 quavers in a bar

9 quavers in a bar

Remember the rhythm of music is just as important as the actual notes.
